Daddy’O in Rotterdam this Wednesday!

This Wednesday (30^th April), Rotterdam welcomes a Jazz/Punk/Soul band Daddy’O in Sorbonne! The band, formed just over a year ago,
consists of six musicians who studied here, in Rotterdam Codarts Conservatory. The band even won the X-posure talent competition in
2010, and since then was touring all around. Even though Daddy’O is not that popular (yet!), make sure to listen to some of their songs –
the vocals and absolutely brilliant jazzy accompaniment is amazing and will do you a lot of good in the stressful exam period!

The music, described as “easy-listening” includes original songs as well as takes on all time favorites, such as “Respect” (orig. by Aretha Franklin) or “Summertime” (by Janis Joplin). Playful at times, relaxing and easy, are all the attributes that I can assign to these songs.

So, show up at Sorbonne, great atmosphere guaranteed!

Also, the concert is not late (doors 20:30), so you will be able to enjoy after-party as well!

Currently visitors can admire the exhibition “Every Picture tells a story”. A group of fifteen artists present their works, which have at first glance not much in common. They differ in style, intention, age and background.. Yet they are linked together in their quest to reformulate the basic principles of painting, namely craft, authenticity and virtuosity.

One floor upstairs TENT presents a spatial design, called Shared Space # 3, by the designer Chris Kabel. Kable created circular bank that according to him divides the space into an anonymous public area and a more intimate space. When the visitor sits on the bench towards outwards he/she shares the room with the public. However if the visitors takes a seat towards insight he creates his on private space.

The Hague Jazz Festival Spring is just around the corner and what better way to celebrate the first rays of sunshine than by attending a great music festival? On the 17th, 18th and 19th of June, the city of The Hague will host its sixth edition of the The Hague Jazz Festival.

During these three days national and international musicians will take the stage and perform. Unfortunately tickets are rather costly, namely 55 euros per day. Luckily however, the festival board has additionally organized numerous free performances a month prior to the actual festival! These so-called ‘Warming Up’ concerts will take place from the 19th to the 23rd of May in 13 different locations scattered across the city.

One of the thematic trends for spring (and summer) 2011 is, still, the punk style. Since its introduction in 2010 it has become of more and more influence: its elements impact a lot of other trends. The punk style includes studs, heavy boots and safety pins.

Tip for the punk look: you can easily create this look by using accessoires that stand out and making unexpected combinations – wear heavy boots under a dress or get new laces for your sneakers to spice them up and wear them under a skirt. Lace clothing

Lace fabrics in spring 2011 are classic with a quality antique touch. We see a lot of lace skirts and dresses, both black, white, and colored. We can see this trend represented in almost every collection in any fashion store: go to H&M or Zara, or take a look in your mom’s closet!

The untypical character of Bill Cunningham, as well as his respected profile among fashion gurus all over the world have attracted the curiosity of Philip Gefter and Richard Press. The latter has directed a documentary about the photographer, to be released in the United Stated by the end of March. The film, by going deeper into the life of Mr. Cunningham, his story and habits, offers us a refreshing take on today’s fashion world.

The documentary draws an interesting portrait of the photographer, blending in interwiews from fashion authorities such as Anna Wintour, Tom Wolfe, Brooke Astor or David Rockefeller, while capturing moments of Bill Cunningham’s singular life. The love and intrigue expressed by the interviewees for the photographer contrasts indeed with the main character’s lonely and bare lifestyle, whose pictures represent the central element in his own universe. Beyond the photographies, Bill Cunningham shares throughout the film his love for fashion and clothes, and we can only have great respect for this man who, for nearly all his life, has been an authority in this world without never wanting more than fulfil his passion and express his enthusiasm for fantastic garnments with the readers of the New Your Times.

While the film will be opening soon in a limited number of cinemas across the United States, and will be presented at a festival in Australia, no release date has been fixed for any European country. Let’s hope the documentary will be presented soon in cinemas across the Netherlands!

Practical Information

Tickets for the festival are sold for 150€ for three days and a spot in the campsite. The festival is held, as usual, in Landgraaf, not far from Maastricht, as well as the Belgian and German borders. Landgraaf can be accessed by train from Amsterdam or Rotterdam in 2.30h, and from there free shuttles will drive you to the grounds where the festival is held.

The ones that brought back the indie rock for us in 2001, when the genre had lost to many fans to recover, according to many observers, are now delivering their very promising latest opus ten years later. Four albums in a decade is not that much, you could argue, but The Strokes always rhyme with quality, probably the reason why American magazine NME voted their first CD, Is This It, best album of the decade.

Beyond the band, The Strokes have shown us that, unlike a Mick Jagger and his flop albums without The Rolling Stones, its members have talent on their own. With two acclaimed albums for Albert Hammond Jr., the band’s guitarist, and an opus released in 2009 by singer Julian Casablacas, we can have no doubt about the potential of The Strokes.

If only time could have frozen in 2001, when these five would not have been able to believe that they would one day fight and go on a break! While listening to Under Cover of Darkness, the first single of Angles, we can only hope that no more break is going to comprimise the musical future of the band.

The Strokes, whose album you can listen to on their website, have already announced some european dates! Unfortunately, with no concert planned in the Netherlands or in Belgium yet, you will have to travel to the Spain or Portugal to assist to their performance. The band will be on stage during the Benicassim festival, July 14-17, Spain, and will perform in Lisbon, Portugal on July, 16, at the occasion of the Super Bock, Super Rock Festival.

The Strokes

Motel Mozaique is a multi-discipline festival of art, music and performance, which annually takes place several main locations in the centre of Rotterdam. This year the festival is held from the 7th until the 10th of April. The arts festival in which various cultural institutions work together aims to provide audience an inspiring program. At the very fore are certainly the bands, which range in alternative genre. Also this year Motel Mozaique managed to organize an impressive line up. One of the headliner is doubtless the London based producer and songwriter James Blake. The 22 year old released his Feist cover ‘Limit To Your Love’ by the end of 2010. The huge hitsingle was followed recently by the release of his self-titled debut album, which is a middle ground between electronica and soulful balladry. An insider tip s the Scottish band Belle & Sebastian who revive folk music. The band presents their recent album “Write about love”. Notable is that their show on the festival is their only performance in Hollnad this year. Besides the line up the Motel Mozaique can show off  about their multiple, but unique locations. Among others performances will be held in Rotterdamse Schouwburg, Rotown, De Gouvernestraat  and Off Corso.

For festival guests that want to end these great days in an unusual but festival related way, Motel Mozaïque offers the possibility to spend the night in fascinating accommodations like especially for Motel Mozaïque designed works of art and at unique locations in Rotterdam.Past years guests slept in abnormal place like tree huts, shop-windows, churches and hospitals.
